Over the 4th of July weekend, Ben and I traveled up to Putney, VT to spend sometime with F/friends. While Ben and I had heard of the Quaker Card Game Unable, Unwilling from Robin Mohr's twitter feed, this was our first time playing the game.

Ben and I are traveling to Peru in January 2006 to attend the FWCC World Plenary Meeting as representatives of New England Yearly Meeting. There are still spots open for folks to come to the gathering as Open Spaces as well as scholarships for Young Friends and Young Adult Friends. I worked on the invitational video for the event and I'm excited to do some more video work and photography at the gathering. Simon Lamb, the Clerk of the International Planning Committee wrote the letter below to specifically invite Young Friends and Young Adult Friends.

This year on the 4th of July weekend, Ben and I traveled up to Londonderry to spend time with his sister and brother and their children. It was two days filled with simple pleasures of playing soccer, feeding hungry boys, watching the Parent Trap (the original one) and eating ice-cream by the pond. We didn't see any fireworks this year, though we heard some from a distance. I felt content and full of joy during these lazy summer days; for which I am deeply thankful.

This spring I led a series of events around the greater Boston area called Theology on Tap as part of my role as coordinator of the Quaker Studies Program. These were informal gatherings at various bars for lively conversation about theology and life. A lot of people came out to these events and we had a great time! The themes of the events were:

This March, Ben and I traveled down to Florida to visit Ben's grandfather. We escaped the huge mounds of snow in favor of a mini vacation and a ton of sunshine. We went to a Spring Training Red Sox game and visited with a family that while they are moving back to Boston, we got to see them in Florida! It was a much needed getaway and a beautiful chance to see family and friends.

Ben and I did our second Quaker film project! This time I got behind the camera and did some of the cinematography. The day was a ton of fun and Ben and I are so thankful to everyone who came out and participated.

Celebrating Imbolc
Imbolc, the February Cross Quarter day in the Northern Hemisphere, celebrates the stirrings of life in a world asleep after a long winter. At this time, we are reminded of the continued reawakening of the earth and all her creatures. Imbolc falls directly between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox, this Fire festival brings hope and gentle illumination.

While I see my fellow chaplain interns as pilgrims hiking along the same path as me, we chaplain interns are not the only pilgrims on journeys in the hospital. Our patients are pilgrims on their own journeys too.

While my program is incredibly supportive and reminds me constantly to be gentle with myself, it is me who doesn’t let me stumble. The harsh critiquing voice in my head is dangerous to my heart’s growth and fulfillment. So how do I unite my heart and my head? How do I help them be friends?

This Sunday, I was invited to preach at Allen's Neck Friends Meeting. The message I gave explored what happens in Quaker worship and how we engage in that space. Here is the text that I prepared and spoke from: "As we sit in worship and attend to that active life within, we are finding that place of God inside of us that speaks to that of God in others. It is that small still voice that we are waiting for, listening for, hoping for. That small still voice that will rise up out of that rich life between silence and sound and speak wisdom and revelation."

Over the last few months, my life has shifted and changed. In June, Ben and I were married under the care of Beacon Hill Friends Meeting. We spent the summer traveling, first for our honeymoon and then for Yearly Meeting and finally for Burning Man. We settled back in Boston in early September just in time for me to start my first credit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, a program that will begin my educational journey towards being a hospital chaplain

Its in this bewilderment of busyness and time that I have moments when I say to myself "I should be writing on my blog... but what should I write about? Nothing interesting happens to me anymore. Should I write about cleaning the kitchen?"

As my family and friends can tell you, I struggle most of the time being patient. I pray that in this beautiful time of deep expectancy in my life, in the lives of my friends and family, in the world, that I and others can be appreciative of the moments along the way. I pray that I can remember to stop and find joy in the green shoots poking their way up out of the ground even though I can't wait to see the flowers.

My friend Julie told me that the snow had just melted that week. We could still see patches of it here and there and I was reminded of the snow banks still waiting for me back home in Boston. I snapped a quick picture of this crocus on my way out, humming to myself the Julian of Norwich song. "All shall be well, I'm telling you, let the winter come and go. All shall be well again, I know."

Monday, Ben and I were on our way to a movie for date night and we came across this picture on the subway. "What's missing?" Ben asked half jokingly. (now, insight in to Ben and my relationship, I'm often totally immune to "half joke" comments) "What do you mean what's missing?" I replied.." Oh, You mean the whole of history between 13,500 B.C. and 1620?"

The other thing that most pilgrims will say that they miss is following the yellow arrows or flechas. While I was on the Camino, I had more then my share of frustrating moments trying to find the arrows through any given town :) but there was always a single goal... a single direction to come back to. Even when I deviated from the path, got stuck in flooding pastures, and had to stare down a rather large cow and some mean dogs to get back to the path, the arrows were there, waiting to show me the way.

I am truly thankful for the heart, spirit and presence of all those present during the Steering Committee Meetings. We wrestled with some difficult issues and it took time for us to come together as a community. I left the meetings still believing in the mission and work of CPT and energized to continue to work with this group of people. My sense of thankfulness is hard to express in words... its deep. On Sunday, I got the chance to preach for CPT at Spring Hill UCC church. As I'm easing into writing these devotionals daily, I thought I'd post a bit of my sermon here.
